Founded in 720 BC, Sybaris was an ancient city of Magna Græcia (Latin for “Greater Greece”), on the Western coast of the Gulf of Taranto. Situated on fertile plains, the city had an abundant supply of food and resources at its disposal. Contrary to popular policy at the time, the city freely admitted citizenship to traveling settlers.
Rich with resources and a willingness to work with an expanding network of people, it was not long before Sybarites made it the wealthiest and most powerful city in Greece. Sources claim that the city ruled over 25 subject cities and had nearly 300,000 citizens–over four times time size of Athens.
